Turkish Travertines

Travertines are sedimentary rocks composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). They occur as a result of the calcium carbonate in groundwater precipitating under certain conditions. This precipitation forms travertines with soft lines over time. Conditions that play a role in sedimentation; These are conditions such as evaporation, decrease in the amount of carbon dioxide ( CO2 ) contained in the water, and decrease in the pressure on the water.

Turkey, the richest country in the world in terms of existing natural stone reserves, is located in the Alpine Himalayan Mountain Belt. Denizli Basin has been the subject of different settlements during the Roman, Byzantine and Seljuk periods for more than two thousand years. Ancient cities such as Hierapolis (Pamukkale), Laodikeia, Tripolis and Colossae are the most prominent representatives of these settlements. The most commonly used building block in the construction of historical buildings in these ancient cities was Turkish travertine.

The best quality travertines in the world are Turkish travertines. Turkish Denizli travertine is extracted from quarries in the Ballık (northwest of Kaklık), Kocabaş, Gürlek, Karateke, Yenicekent and Gölemezli regions of Denizli. The distinguishing features of Turkish Denizli travertine are briefly as follows; It differs from other travertines in Turkey and the world with its different color tones of cream and brown. One of the most beautiful travertine examples in the world is Denizli-Pamukkale travertines.
